CQ's Carey Discusses Sen. DeMint's Hold On Approval Of Von Eschenbach To Head FDA Main Category: Sexual Health / STDs News
Article Date: 27 Sep 2006 - 12:00pm (PDT) | email this article | printer friendly | view or write opinions | Mary Agnes Carey, associate editor of CQ Healthbeat, discusses obstacles to approving acting FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach's nomination to permanently head FDA in this week's "Health on the Hill from kaisernetwork.org and CQ." According to Carey, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee last week by voice vote approved von Eschenbach's nomination to head the agency. However, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has said he will block full Senate confirmation of the nomination until FDA takes steps to discourage the use of and suspend sales of Mifeprex, which is known generically as mifepristone and which when taken with misoprostol causes a medical abortion. DeMint says the drug has been linked to a number of deaths and many injuries, according to Carey (Carey, "Health on the Hill from kaisernetwork.org and CQ," 9/25).
